Frequently Asked Questions about Paediatric Occupational Therapy

Paediatric Occupational Therapy helps children develop the skills they need for everyday life. For children, these are primarily playing, learning, socialising and participating in family and school routines.

At Mini Milestones OT, we use play-based, child-led therapy to build confidence, independence and essential development skills. 

Have you noticed your child having some difficulties in these potentials areas:

• Getting themselves dressed, using the toilet, feeding themselves using utensils
• Struggling to follow everyday routines
• Managing their emotions resulting in challenging behaviours
• Becomes overwhelmed or appears to shut down in response to certain sensory input
• Struggling to interact with their peers
• Needing extra support to start a task, remain focussed & complete a task
• Struggling with fine motor tasks such as holding and controlling a pencil to draw or write or frequently dropping objects

Then OT is likely going to be beneficial to help your child meet these milestones!

Start by completing the Online Referral Form. Within 24 hours (between Monday - Friday) you will receive a call to discuss your referral and book in your initial assessment.

The initial consultation will involve a lot of information gathering and goal setting to inform what ongoing therapy sessions will look like. 

Sessions are play-based, fun, and tailored to your child’s needs/goals. Your child will take part in engaging activities that help develop skills in areas they are having difficulties. Sessions may include sensory play, movement, hands-on tasks, and school-readiness activities.

At the end of each session, you’ll receive a brief update on what we worked on and simple strategies to continue supporting your child at home, Kindy or school.

Mobile Occupational Therapy brings therapy directly to your child in their environment where they live, learn and play.

• Skills are developed right where your child uses them - such as building social skills in their Kindy playground or using the toilet in their own home

• Therapy is in their comfortable environment - Your child may feel more confident in their own home resulting in increased engagement and learning

• Easy for families - No travel times, waiting rooms, driving all over town, mobile therapy comes to you and fits around your families schedule

• Increased carryover of skills - Strategies are practiced where they're needed, helping your child transfer skills more easily into everyday life

NDIS - Mini Milestones OT welcomes clients who are self-managed and plan-managed. We are sadly unable to offer services to NDIA managed clients at this time.

Private - All sessions are to be kindly paid for in full on the day of your appointment.

Medicare Rebates - You may be eligible for a Medicare rebate on a number of sessions. You will need a complex care plan provided by your GP or Paediatrician prior to your appointment.

At Mini Milestones OT we understand life happens and cancellations and rescheduling may need to be made. 

To give each family the opportunity to receive support, we kindly ask that you provide 48 hours notice for any cancellation or rescheduling to allow us to offer that appointment to someone on the waitlist.

Cancellations made within 48 hours of your appointment will incur a fee and we appreciate your understanding of this.

• Cancellation with more that 48 hours notice - No charge
• Cancellation made within 48 hours - You will be charged 50% of your appointment fee (less travel)
• Cancellation made within 24 hours - You will be charged 100% of your appointment fee (less travel)
• Cancellation advised on arrival to your appointment - You will be charged 100% of your appointment fee + travel
